Approaching the door of Winter Solstice...North Pole tilted furthest away from SUN. A time to release the past! Monday, early afternoon (EST), we begin the big AXIS shift (!)... our movement back toward the Sun... daylight now slowly grows longer. A new year begins! SUN enters Capricorn, w gifts/challenges of "personal integrity", "spiritual self-reliance", and bringing themes of 'the materialistic vs the spiritual', and 'responsibility'.

New Years Contact Improv Jam

Bring in the new decade dancing at Claymont! We'll gather from Wednesday, December 30th to Sunday, January 3rd with a special Ceremony New Years Eve!

The ECJ is four juicy days of dancing among the fields and paths at Claymont Court Estates, West Virginia, around one hour's car ride from Washington, DC, USA.
Welcoming all experience levels, the New Years East Coast Jam includes facilitated warm-ups, open dancing, a New Years Ritual, one or more evenings of performance, two dance spaces, shared lodging, luscious vegetarian meals by Mirabi, sauna, wide vistas, lots of outside spaces to explore. And the people you love dancing with most!
A day at the east coast jam goes something like this: We wake from glorious sleep to eat lovingly prepared breakfast, stroll through the apple orchard to the huge octagonal dance barn. After a facilitated warm-up each morning, we dance, sweat, dance, sweat, dance, sweat, sauna, then stroll back to the magnificent mansion. After lunch we gather for a "town meeting," where we collaborate to create the jam, then we dance more, make music, nap, journal, give and get massages, tell stories, play games.
East coast jam attendees…
teach a class, take a class, practice, learn, walk, play, move, sing, roll, leap, stretch, wander, cavort, breathe. Offerings might include authentic movement Action Theater, a beginning contact improv class, a moving and drawing structure, a yoga class, poetry and chocolate, an outdoor improvisation score… which we do till we're hungry enough for one more delicious meal. Evenings we dance more, sauna more, sing more, move more, play more, schmooze more, laugh more, talk more, walk more, sleep more, and eat peanut butter and honey on rice cakes and drink tea into the wee hours contemplating the important (or not so important) questions of our lives.

Cost is $295 for the full event, $245 for three nights, $185 for two nights, $95 for one night.

Late registration fee $25 for Payments after December 2nd, $50 for payments received after December 20th.

merging through contact

I just read something in a dance therapy book that I wanted to discuss here.

In the book The Dancing Dialogue by Suzi Tortora she says:
"If people limit themselves to shape-flow activities (which are movements that move like the breath or those that help integrate outside stimulus and are personal) they will not relate to others. Shape-flow movements can become self-stimulating actions and can develop into a way to self-regulate in order to avoid uncomfortable interactions. In contrast, two people enter into shape-flow actions together, a condition without boundaries takes place, with each person experiencing a physical and emotional merging with the other. This is the root of sensual sensations. This phenonmenon relates to Mahler, Pine and Bergman's (1975) normal symbiotic attachment phase of development in which a baby experiences self and mother as sharing a common boundary. The mother-infant dyad's early nursing experiences are an excellent example of a mering shape-flow relationship: the baby's sof mouthing at the breast stimulates the mother to slow down and regulate her breathing pattern to match the sucking rhythm of the infant. In this satisfying interaction, the baby and mother are attuned to each other."

When I read this, I thought of contact improvisation - as for me it is often a shape-flow movement, I integrate the outside and inside world and invite others in. And while there is quite a bit of talk about boundaries in the majority of contact improvisation classes, I'm not so sure there aren't strong bonds made in dances anyway. I know I have a difficult time truly understanding how to put up safe boundaries and still be open. Contact is a deep form and I would bet pretty surely that energetic, emotional even, merging occurs.

The only reason I mention it is because I have experienced the vulnerability (sometimes great sometimes not) and energetic draining from these types of bonds made, and that perhaps a good thing to include in contact improvisation training, or even as a jam ritual, would be regular conscious "cord cutting" to those we've danced with that we aren't merged with in our personal lives.

Is anyone interested in discussing this a bit? (boundaries, basically)

I'm also curious about discussing 1) any addiction-like possibilities in contact improvisation - to the ways of experiencing the world in this way 2) and the idea that contact improvisation could leave one open to too much to the world that isn't welcome. Does anyone have any ... things they do to go from contact improv back into the real world? It seems a terrible idea to have to reshut-down, and I'm not saying that's necessary, but I just think this is potentially a really important topic.

I'm afraid I'm not being terribly clear right now, as I'm attempting to explain fairly spiritual things rather than just physical, but I think I'll leave it in its vaguity and we'll see what arises.

INTRO: Join us for a four-day celebration of CI with copious amounts of jam time and morning labs amidst a beautiful beachside setting.

LODGING: Through a special residency with Centrum, jam participants will be able to stay at the artist lodging including two and three-bedroom houses each with a kitchen, all nestled together in the same housing complex. One fourplex with an expanded kitchen will provide a group gathering place for meals and other events.

FOOD: In order to keep costs minimal for participants, there will be two options. 1) Bring your own food and cook together with your housemates (and other invitees) or 2) purchase the dinner option (3 meals - Thur-Sat.) for $50 or an any individual dinner $20. Work-study participants will cook these meals.

JAMMING: Studios in building 204 will be available for the use of jam participants throughout the day into the evening (until midnight). They have nice wood floors and plenty of light.

TRAVEL: Centrum is located in Fort Warden State Park in Port Townsend, a picturesque historic town circa 1851, approximately 1.5 hours from Seattle (not sure from Vancouver, anyone care to elaborate?)

COST:

First 25 participants before November 1 with deposit, fee is $200-$300 (sliding scale) -includes lodging and four-day jam attendance (food is not included - see dinner option below)
After November 1 or 25 people, whichever comes first, cost is $250-$350 (sliding scale).

Single day jam attendance with lodging included is $100/day before Nov.1, $125 after.
Single day jam attendance only (provide your own lodging) is $75/day before Nov. 1, $100 after.
Dinner Option - Add on a group dinner Thursday-Saturday evenings (total 3 days/dinners prepared by work-study) $50 for all three or $20 any single dinner Note: Each unit has its own kitchen, so you can opt to make your own dinners (and other meals) with housemates and others and save any additional cost.

We would like to make another announcement about the Ponderosa XXL 2009 program this year.

We may have over stepped our boundaries with this enormous list of workshops and events but we will attempt anyway to lure all of you travelers and Berlin city rats out to Stolzenhagen.

Meg Stuarts workshop, our 10Day Artist Exchange, and our helper program are all full.....

BUT

We have a BMC intensive ( June 1-4) I would like to promote with special guests Kerstin Kussmaul, Saliq Savage and Jen Polins that I would highly suggest for any BMC interested folks. Saliq has been central in documenting Bonnie's work and is a teacher trainer, so he is at the source of some good first hand information.

As well, Steph and Kathleen (May 25-29) have a few more spots and are at it again... outside the festival time!..more breathing space and concentration…

Improvisation: Performance as Exposure
The training of Contact Improvisation is a physical practice that includes increasing range of motion, awakening awareness and clarifying intention. We learn through kinetic feedback with another as well as through exploring different patterns of movement and how all of our senses lead us into dancing. Touch is not enough. Preparing to perform requires more than awareness, it asks us to be seen and to see. In this workshop, we will focus on meeting truthfully and directly the unexpected. Contact Improvisation will be our entrance into the physicality of our images and applications of Body Mind Centering (r) will fine tune us to the mechanics of our instruments - our bodies. Weight, mass and breath become movement, become landscape, become story, become question, become idea. We will play with heightening our senses and perceptions, amplifying our awareness to expose more of our interior, making the invisible visible to play with time and space. Witnessing, reading, writing and the voice will be used to further engage and enliven our imaginations and for discovering new challenges and risks. How do we ready ourselves for performing and who is the being in the body? The workshop is accompanied by live music of Italian guest musician Roberto Bellatalla (double bass and other).

K.J. Holmes is an independent dance artist based in Brooklyn NY who has been exploring improvisation as process and performance since 1981. She teaches, choreographs and performs at festivals, universities and venues throughout the world, as a soloist and in her collaborations with artists such as Simone Forti, Image Lab (Lisa Nelson, Karen Nelson and Scott Smith) and in the work of Steve Paxton. Her influences include Contact Improvisation, Body-Mind Centering (r), Yoga (certified teacher 2007), Authentic movement, Ideokinesis, Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques, Martial Dance, world vocal studies and contemporary dance and theater. A 1999 graduate of the School for Body-Mind Centering, K.J. is adjunct faculty at New York University Experimental Theater Wing/ongoing teacher Movement Research NYC/has a private practice in Dynamic Alignment and Re-integration/and is currently studying Sanford Meisner acting technique at the William Esper Studio in NYC as well as developing an evening length piece entitled This is where we are (or take arms against a sea of troubles) which looks at where the body and language meet.

Using Contact Improvisation as a foundation, we will create ways to improvise dancing in duo, trio, and ensemble.
A detailed survey of CI essentials, with a focus on efficient, effortless use of technical skills, will develop a facility for, and availability to, changing physical states and levels of touch and weight.
We will work with strategies for improvising improvising or, expanding our range of choices—how we improvise the way we improvise, as well as ways of embodying our imagination in movement.

Ray Chung
Is a performer, teacher, engineer, and artist who has worked with Contact Improvisation and improvisation since 1979.
He uses Contact Improvisation as part of improvisational performance practice and integrates other movement forms into his work, including martial arts, bodywork and Authentic Movement. He regularly collaborates with dancers, musicians, and other artists and has worked with Nancy Stark Smith, Lisa Nelson, Steve Paxton, Peter Bingham, and others.
Ray's work has been shown in various festivals and venues throughout Europe, Japan, South America, Canada, and the U.S.

Sleeping and eating:
Our structure offers free beds, in a collective situation, with special mattresses in the workshop premises (160 square meters), a beautiful studio 9 meters high and very spacious (15x12 meters), full of frescoes.
This hospitality is available free to participants, who are requested to keep the place clean, providing an orderly area for living together.
For those who do not wish to share sleeping space, we can reserve a room at a bed and breakfast or a hotel.

Meals: a cook available will prepare dinner and supper for the group.
The cost is 12 euros a day (6 euros per meal).
For breakfast there is an additional fee of 3 euros.
The total cost is 15 euros a day for all three meals (dinner, supper, breakfast).
Participants are free to choose whether they wish to include all meals (dinner, supper, breakfast) or individual meals, communicating in advance what they plan to do so that the cook can buy whatever is necessary.

Camp CONTACT at Burning Man

Registration for Camp CONTACT at Burning Man 2008 is now open!

Contact Camp has been a fixture on the playa for the past three years, and we're bringing it back in style for 2008. We've got some new infrastructure, a distributed leadership team, and a new on-line registration system. We plan to better coordinate work party participation and work shift participation prior to the event so that we're not spending valuable time on the playa figuring it all out.

Camp CONTACT will host 80-100 Contact Improvisators for the ten days spanning Saturday, August 23rd to Monday, Sept 1st. We'll start off by building a kitchen, a common area and the dance spaces. We'll also have shade structures to keep your tent cool, with the possibility of other amenities. We come to the playa to offer the gift of Contact Improvisation. Mornings, we'll be able to jam in Burning Man's Center Camp; afternoons, we can teach or take beginners and advanced classes. Each evening we will share in community meals and then glow in all that Black Rock City has to offer at night, including some of our own jams.

I'd like to offer private belly dance classes for anyone who feels like they need more one-on-one instruction, privacy, patience and a teacher dedicated to spreading the joy of the dance! You'll get to work at your own pace, wear whatever you like, and be encouraged to find the beauty of the dance in your own way.

I absolutely believe in the spirituality of belly dancing, and see it the way it was meant to be seen- a beautiful act that praises life and strengthens women's bodies.

The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

Wear comfortable yoga clothes or dress up for each lesson- it’s up to you!

The schedule is absolutely flexible, and I will do my best to work out a time that works best for you- lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours- again, it's up to you! The price will vary as to how long you want your lesson to be. To give you an idea, an hour-long lesson will be $15. However, trades can be made and I can always knock down the price if you need it. My goal is to inspire you and help you find belly dance as wonderful as I do.

The Values of Contact Improvisation

Some time ago, I participated in, and later facilitated, a discussion on tribe.net about values and contact improvisation (CI). At issue were economic considerations: the cost of classes, the ability of artists to make a living, the diversity of jams, etc. As someone with an advanced degree in an area closely related to economics (M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research), I took particular interest in these issues. Practitioners in my field, among other talents, use mathematical analysis to spot inconsistencies in decisions, strategies, and daily policies that elude even experienced professional intuition. My contribution to the discussion began in the usual way, with a solicitation of answers to the question “what are we trying to achieve?” It had already led to a possibly-viable alternative – the creation of a membership program which would subsidize attendance of more-frequent dancers at festivals, etc., through a small increment in the cost of less-frequent dancers – when the discussion broke down for lack of participation. One discussant expressed disbelief that this method could lead to progress. This disbelief is as widespread as it is untrue. I could cite the many improvements that these methods have led to, or I could cite the Nobel Prize-winning research showing how great a potential for improvement exists (see Daniel Kahneman, Economics, 2002). Nevertheless, my area of expertise suffers from a crippling lack of exposure. I won’t address this issue, however. This article will deal, rather, with the “meta-issue” of values in CI versus those of economics in general.

It’s well-known that we’ve resisted economic pressures to turn CI into one of those actively-marketed performing art techniques that one occasionally sees with a trademark next to the name, an extra-expensive path for potential teachers, and the like. It seems obvious that we all agree, CI should never be about making money. Economic and statistical sciences, however, are much more pervasive than that. More and more, they are finding use in the nonprofit sector, where organizations compete for donors rather than customers, and struggle to show what bang-for-the-buck they can deliver, “bang” measuring whatever happens to be of interest. At an intra-organizational level, pricing and many other decisions can be manipulated to increase performance, however one chooses to define it. Profit is really just another objective. “Environmental sustainability” and “economic justice” are some others that are currently more popular. Combine your favorites. Invent your own. You’ll still be well within the purview of economic and statistical science.

Given this flexibility, it seems worthwhile to ask what “hidden” values these sciences themselves bring to the table, in order to evaluate whether they can be made of use to realizing other values more particular to our “tribe.” Inherent in all economic science is the concept sometimes called “economic man”. Economic man, often a straw man and object of caricature and ridicule for many on the political left, nevertheless has some appealing qualities. I will not pass judgment here on whether they are desirable for us. I only wish to make them apparent, so that choosing to accept or dismiss them will be done with consciousness.

“Economic man” is an intellectual. By that, I mean that he imagines things in his mind and calculates among them before consciously settling on a course of action. Already, the dissonance with CI is glaring, perhaps terminally so. This “perhaps” is precisely the issue. The issue is not whether such methods are fruitful. It goes without saying that they are. The examples, in every field, even the performing arts, are legion. The issue is whether we are even willing to consider the question – already adopting the stance of this man – whether using this mode of decision-making (a cost, because it is antithetical to CI principles) is worth its advantages (the exact extent of which are uncertain, but that uncertainty is not a critical issue for this particular entity, “economic man”). To go further, if we are willing to consider this question, how much of an advantage would it have to give? Such advantage could be stated in any concrete terms. Would it be worth it if the form were to die out for sure, without it? Etc. But I digress.

These imaginings of economic man bear further specification. They are images, specifically. They are images of objects, present at one time or another, and such presence or absence is apparent, or, in mathematical terms, decidable, whether logically or empirically. For example, the number of people alive with a given proficiency in CI, the number of people who have been to a CI jam within the past year, the amount of fees above which a given dancer will choose not to attend a given festival, or attend in a different capacity, or attend an alternative festival in its place, etc. Complication is not the issue, here. Far more complicated problems have been conquered by our friend homo economicus. In a sense, anything can be described in this way. Anything that cannot, due to the biases of our culture, has its status as “thing” (as opposed to nothing) drawn seriously into question. This, however, is another issue for decision. Is going along with this particular aspect of mainstream culture, i.e. its radical privileging of the present, of presence, of worldliness, if you will, this privileging that is absolutely necessary for science of any kind to be brought to bear, worth the advantages it brings? Again, the same sorts of questions can be asked. CI, as a counterculture movement, would prefer, ceteris paribus, to distance itself from science as much as possible. But what if the stakes of doing so were very high?

“Economic man” is more than just an intellectual and more than just a scientist in general. He not only imagines the multiplicity of outcomes that could result from his actions and the many ways of knowing. He – and this is what makes him specifically an economic scientist – has preferences among these outcomes, and these preferences themselves, in total, usually have particular qualities. There is some dissonance within and around the field of economics on this point. “Alternative utility theories” have been proposed. However, discussion of these goes beyond the scope of this article. We will consider only the orthodox model, here. Not to worry, because, of the issues presented so far, these are the least controversial.

These preferences have particular qualities. One of them is “transitivity.” This sounds more technical than it is. Suppose there are three mutually exclusive outcomes, each of which completely describe a state of affairs, in all its relevant aspects, and only one of which can occur: A, B, and C. Suppose we prefer A to B, all things considered. Suppose we also prefer B to C under the same condition. Transitivity means we no longer get to choose between A and C. Given our other preferences, we must prefer A to C, because we prefer A to B and B to C. Transitivity reduces the number of choices we have to make. Some consider this an advantage. Certainly, it solves a number of technical difficulties when making decisions. How does the CI community feel?

Another quality of the preferences of economic man is that they exhibit “independence of irrelevant alternatives.” This means, to use the above example, that if we take B out of the set of outcomes under consideration, our preferences regarding A and C don’t change. Again, this is choice-reducing, because it determines our preferences between A and C in the absence of B. When we above asked the question regarding A and C, B was considered part of the choice-set. Again, some consider this an advantage. What about the CI community?

Worthy of consideration, when considering the above choices, is also the political nature of decision-making. The more of the above that are accepted at some reasonable level, the greater the dependence on people, such as, I admit, myself, who have special decision-analysis and -assessment skills. The issue is not one of power – i.e. whose preferences are maximized – but of politics, i.e. who is doing the technical work that substantiates the decision, even if their particular preferences are expressly ignored? For instance, I am not a teacher of CI. Therefore, under current arrangements, I cannot participate in WCCIF decision-making processes. This rule, not without its reason, was made specifically in response to someone outside the WCCIF teacher community who attempted to take control of the WCCIF decision-making process. Such issues are of great concern in the CI community.

There are other meta-decisions that could very well be of issue for the CI community, of a yet more technical nature. However, this article has achieved its objective. The above-discussed issues need be not only decided, but evaluated, by the CI community. If it chooses not to do so, alas, it has still made a choice, and that choice will have material consequences.

Heart-felt curves
It is a great honor to present and pay homage to Luigi Mario, known also as Engaku Taino, a Zen master who has been living in the hinterland of Orvieto for many years. He is a fascinating figure with proficiencies and preparation of alpine skiing and rock climbing, as well as a Tai Chi Chuan guru, but above all a person to meet and know to practice meditation. Luigi Mario has been invited to the festival for two reasons: the first is to lead, aided by assistants, a free climbing session on the rocks of Ferentillo, a splendid zone in Umbria-Valnerina, on June 23rd. It is a unique occasion for those who practice Contact as well as others, because it gives one a chance to find out what it's like trying one's hand at a height of 30 meters, using one's strength, resistance, balance, gravity, weight, feeling of the void, and any number of other emotions to explore. The second reason is purely contemplative: three meetings of Tai Chi Chuan and meditation.

live music and live dancers

An infrequent and enthusiasticly dorky contact guy at best, I Iean more toward other expressions -
music for example..
I've been working as a solo musician with two C.I. dancers (who've danced together a lot),
our aim being to possibly gel some sort of structure, or dance piece form, to improvise off of.
Maybe a performance eventually,
maybe just for the joy in it.
We've done a few sessions using electric guitar, ambient moody sounds and such - went good.
This afternoon I switched to electric violin, run thru a sort of wah tubular fx filter (with some subtle reverb).
Very fine results!
All the airy, textured sounds of a fiddle (bowed or plucked) worked splendidly with Kyla and Quint's dancing
and we all got lost in the shifting interplay of sound and bodies.
The violin played the dancers and the dancers played violin, don't'cha know.
Also I'd asked about hands.. using hands in dance, like those lovely asian traditions of stylized gestures..
so the dancers at times emphasized this aspect, and I used their hands as a focus to build musical moods from..
We worked just one hour without stopping - but it felt sublime.

going back to that thread last year about quality of dance education and training vs the cost, there was just an excellent article on the bbc about Americans' tendency to think that a bottle of wine tastes better if it costs more. when offered two glasses of the same wine, they will tend to claim with confidence that the one they were told was more expensive tastes significantly better.

update on Bay Area Contact Jams... 4 per week! plus Dance Jam

Hi all... just went to the Fairfax jam last night (Monday ) and felt like letting folks know about it... really a happening jam! There were about 28 people who came last night making it the second biggest jam in the bay area behind the SF Tuesday night jam at Counterpulse.

The Fairfax jam is 8p-10p every Monday at Marin Ayurveda (85 Bolinas Rd in Fairfax). There is a warm up class 7p-8p which is usually taught by Rana Stewart, although I'll usually teach there when I'm in town. The vibe is really friendly and inviting and at the same time very focussed. It's a small space, but if it gets too crowded, they open up the yoga studio next door, so it works out well. There is ambient music at the jam. It ends at 10p on the nose, so best to get there early.

For info sake, there are also the following jams
Tuesdays 8p-11p at Counterpulse in SF (Mission and 9th) class with changing instructors 6p-8p. This is still the biggest jam. nice floor, although they could use better lighting.
Saturdays 3:30p-5:30p at 8th Street Studio in Berkeley (8th & Dwight) (sometimes a class beforehand). This is the longest running jam, but is a bit quieter in terms of numbers than it once was... I thin there were about 15 people there this last Saturday, which seemed typical.
Sundays 1:30-4p at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory (Mission and 11th). newer jam that I haven't been to yet, so I can't say anything about it, except that i have the sense that it's smallish, which makes sense as it is just starting out

Of course, the other really big place to go do contact is Friday night Dance Jam, which I think something like 150 to 200 or so people go to every Friday in Berkeley. two rooms of dj'd barefoot dancing. probably a good 30 or so people there at least dabbling in contact over the course of the evening. very fun space! 8th & Dwight in Berkeley 8:30p - 1a

i am helping to organize a conscious men's gathering, wherein we try to build intimacy and connection between a diversity of men (diversity referring to sexual orientation, age, etc). This is an annual event that takes place in the area of Vancouver Canada near the end of february.

The American performer Nita Little will be the special guest of our association, first time in Italy as guest artist, for giving the project “Restless Peace”. The intensive workshop with Nita Little is in the calendar of our Residential Projects 2008, and will be from April 25 to May 2, 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in middle Italy.

After the end of the workshop, on May 3rd and 4th, the association will plan also two days with the International Springfest Jam.

The intensive workshop and the Jam will be held both at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli, in Orvieto.

The urge to move, to go where we have never been, is the soul of our practice in this workshop.
Developing a "home base", a place of personal and creative safety is as important as the journey; how wonderful to be free when you have a home! We learn, how like nomads, we may carry our home with us, even as we track paths in and out of unfamiliar territory.
We focus on developing the mental, emotional, and physical skills that enable dancers to travel creatively. Utilizing a full dance vocabulary, we integrate gestured movement improvisation with contact improvisation and build the skills to consciously weave these two forms.

We investigate “states” of mind / “states” of body as a means to develop and direct creative work in our improvisations. Developing the ability to describe and craft subtle levels of action and experience, we boost our physical potential while increasing our readability. Moving in solo, duet and group forms, we gain compositional tools for structural orientation; like torches, they light the way.

This workshop is developed for experienced movers who wish to pass beyond the threshold of old patterns. The restless human drive that takes us out of comfort, urges us to meet the unfamiliar, to move into, through and with the unknown, is a dance artist’s call. Here, we harness that drive and discover how, moving at the speed of our restless calling, we can find peace.

This class culminates in a creative work for performance at the workshop and at Zipfest08.

Things we will do:
Go deep into the physical philosophy behind contact improvisation.
Learn underlying CI principles that manifest as pathways of action.
Build the tools for safe physical and creative relationships
Discover different spatial orientations: vertical/hierarchical and horizontal/diffuse.
Learn about our temporal orientation and develop tools that modulate time.
Develop the skills to be able to move freely between states of mind.
Deepen our agreements to open to life, to the dance.

Nita Little has been developing, choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact Improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others.
She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world, who are themselves now master dancers and teachers: Gretchen Spiro, Andrew Harwood, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Julie Oak, Peter Bingham to name just a few. Through CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind body relationship. Since 1981 she has been developing an evolving curriculum called The Mind in Motion, which explores the range of experiential states along the mind-body continuum and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as other movement forms. This work is informed by her investigation of the mind through work such as hypnotherapy and NeuroLinguistic Programming.

As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. While anchored in process, it frequently explores character, story, and concept.

Nita received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in choreography and was on the California Arts Council Touring Program.
The latter award was to her solo dance company, NITA LITTLE DANCE THEATRE, which she began in 1984, continued through 1990, and reinstated as a pickup company in 2000. In 2002 Nita created Playing God, an hour-long dance opera that received funding through the Dance USA /National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.

Nita teaches and performs yearly at national and international dance festivals including ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, the International Contact Festival Freiburg, Germany,the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California.
She also teaches locally and nationally throughout the year. She lives with her son in Santa Cruz Mountains in California.

As she has pioneered a path in the understanding of the mind/body/spirit relationship, Nita's mission, conscious evolution, has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body.

With Christmas just around the corner…we’re dancing Contact !

Second encounter with Four Seasons Jams, a project of art and culture that continues to call attention to the city of Orvieto in Italy, with regards to Contact Improvisation, the Performing Art and dance of Improvisation.

The next appointment is the International Winter Solstice Jam on the 21, 22 and 23 of December, to greet the arrival of winter, and to celebrate Christmas time and a week from the end of the year, dancing Contact together.
Second Jam in a series of four, every three months, at every change of season.

The jam will be held at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli.

The dance studio in our dynamic residence is welcoming and serene; in addition to dancing together, time and space are dedicated to personal requirements, to being together, to visiting the splendid Etruscan city of Orvieto.

We’ll dance together and we’ll warm ourselves in front of the fire in the fireplace in the frescoed Room of the Four Seasons, during the three days of the jam.

Lodging in the residence
We can host up to 20\24 people, comfortably.
We are organized with mattresses that the participants can use, scattered here and there in the 150 square meters of the studio.
You have to bring your own sleeping bag and a blanket, or sheets\pillow and blanket, as you prefer.
There’s a room in residence equipped for preparing breakfast and meals, in addition to dressing rooms and showers.
One person will cook for us during the three days of the jam.
Lunch will be light (fruit, rice, vegetables and/or cheese, cookies, honey, tea, coffee, etc.).
Evenings a dinner will be offered.

warm greetings fellow rollers and flyers,

I have a question that I hope I can word correctly and it peaks interest. When I'm teaching introductory classes, I usually invite the students to first be aware of the connections around them (space, self, other) and to play with responding or not responding to these connections. I then say that these responses aren't from a place of desire.

What is your experience with personal desire when you dance? Perhaps they don't altogether disappear, but with awareness simply have respect. Perhaps sometimes they are good to be aware of and to follow or not? Do you see our responses as desire?

I don't see them as desire - it's as if what I want from an ego place simply disappears and I'm acting from a much deeper place. I've taken space away from them, and can see them, but no longer want to act on them.

The reason I tell my students this is to aid in their brain asking "what do I have to do?" and to keep open their options by breaking down the walls of "I". But perhaps allowing them to act on desire is okay at first? Any help on this? I want to open not limit my students.

A few of us did a contact improv -style dance as part of the entertainment at a Los Feliz art opening last night - it turned out to be the perfect mix, for the vibe of the event, and got the whole audience dancing after that (of course the fact that their DJ rocked helped too!) :)

I was trying to find something on Nancy's Underscore on the web. as it was surprisingly not-easy to find it written out, when i did find it, I thought to post it here. It is from a jam that happened (is happening?) in Amsterdam, but i don't know who wrote it.

I am wondering about people's experiences of being in Underscore jams and how you experience it changes the opportunities... what does it add, what does it take away (both in terms of explicit intentions and effective practice). any thoughts?

UNDERSCORE:

Developed by Nancy Stark Smith, it is a structure that organizes a contact impro and allows people to work together in a warm-up or an impro session. It generates a very interesting frame to share that may orient the impro and provides a language to be able talk about the experience later.

I. Sequential Aspects: These Aspects of the Score serve as a guide that develops sequentially. The changes from one aspect to the next occurs spontaneously for each dancer rather than being strictly controlled.

a. Arriving:

i. Arriving energetically: bring the focus to the present.

ii. Arriving Physically: bring the attention to the sensation you have in the body at this moment.

iii. Pow-wow (optional): coming together to talk in a circle (names, injuries, how long it will last)

iv. Pre- ambulation: (optional): go through the space, open connections with the space and the people after the talk.

b. Skinesphere:
What’s inside the skin, sensation, what we feel in the small dance.

i. Bonding with the earth: to relax the body, to feel the support from below, connection with the floor.

ii. Mobilizing, agitating the mass: To mix the mass with the air, by jumping, moving, to get a new organization afterwards.

c. Kinesphere:
Attention to what you can reach with your limbs.

i. Low kinsphere: Dome, centre on the floor.

ii. High kinsphere: With the centre high.
(Maybe a moment to balance, to increase our tone.)

iii. Expanding and traveling kinsphere: The base of it is the connection with your centre and with the floor. Breath.

d. Overlapping kinspheres:
We start to be more conscious of the others in the space.

e. Connections- Grazing:
Short connections happening during the Overlapping Ks. Between one and the other is your solo.

i. Coincidence: same time same thing.

ii. Confluence: two rivers that meet.

iii. Divergence

iv. Touch

v. Attraction: is magnetic, you feel attracted by a body or a movement.

vi. Repulsion or Aversion

vii. Intersection: cross ways.

viii. Influence: music, people…

ix. Contrast: acknowledge that difference is a way of connection.

x. Collisions: soft, they wake us up.

xi. Tangent: when our route meets another just on a point.

xii. Empathy and Resonance: I feel something from the distance.

xiii. Shearing: from shearing sheeps.

f. Engagement:
At some point we start to be more implicated with the connection.

i. Development: developing a duo

ii. Resolution: disengagement, end of the duo.

g. Re-circulation through the score:
Allow the sensation to continue. Where am I? What do I want to do? Don’t cut it, don’t escape to drink water.

h. Open Score:
We can use different ways to re-enter the score.

i. Observation

ii. Re-Entrance

i. Final Resolution of the room:
The beginning of the last chapter. Each person resolves his own activity arriving to stillness where we can feel the experience of had been dancing.

j. Disengagement of the whole pattern:
From the stillness we imagine the group as a crystalline form, and when we are ready….end of the total design.

k. Reflection and Harvest:
Introspective revision of the body. And then harvest, you may write or draw or…

l. Sharing:
Harvest’s celebration. Listening to the authentic of the personal experience, we learn, we feel.

II. Non Sequential Aspects- Any time All the time:

a. Streaming:
Current, flow, stream. Small particles of light in movement (like the fffffff of the tv). Vital force. Related with the breath.

b. Gap:
Temporal moment of absence of reference. You don’t have orientation.If we experience a gap we may focus on the streaming, for the current not to diminish, because we need it to orient ourselves. Also allow ourselves to explore the gap, we don’t have to fill it always.

c. Telescoping Mind:
We can zoom in and out when we like to.

i. Zoom in: We concentrate on a particular sensation and we increase the focus. It gives context.

ii. Zoom out: Consciousness of the total composition, without loosing the consciousness of what we are doing.

d. Idiot Button:
When it gets too much the trying to be aware of so many things we press this button and we simplify. We feel, we breath, and if we want awareness we press it again.

We are happy to announce that Simone Forti will be again the guest artist of our residence, for giving her intensive residential workshop “Logomotion Writing Workshop”.
The intensive workshop with Simone Forti is in the ambit of our international projects 2008, and will be from March 8 to 15 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in mid Italy.
The workshop is limited to 16 participants.

Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Kneepads

After wearing kneepads while teaching at Earthdance this past weekend, I began to wonder two things about them.

Do kneepads interfere with the patella tracking in the knee joint?

Which way do people wear kneepads - felt inside or out? curved line up or down?

I wear them with the felt inside. I think there is less wear on the felt that way, and with the curve up so that there is more felt in contact with the ground.

Contact Improv and Healing

I recently went through a lot of physical and emotional trauma...but I found a group here in LA that is a mix of Contact, 5 Rythyms and Soul Motion. I am having these incredibly healing experiences during Contact Improv...my body is going places it has never been, but most suprising is the emotional healing that is occuring. I don't know if it is the touch, the surrender of myself, or something else. Has anyone had a healing experience during the dance? An emotional release of sorts? Or have you heard about healing aspects of Contact Improv? Are there any books to read on the subject? I am curious if I have stumbled onto something!?!?!?!

non-touching exercises

Hi all,

I'm beginning a class with people I feel it may take awhile to actually get to the touching part, and wanted to brainstorm teaching exercises that don't involve touching each other. I know Martin K. has a lot, but am having trouble remembering some.

What I have right now and usually use are general mediation exercises/warmups: scores for getting into your own body, connecting with the floor, soloing with the floor, connecting with the room/air, scores for falling, releasing, imagery, softness... looking for more specific ones though. Exercises that involve dueting with the floor, architecture or objects I usually reserve after people are familiar with dancing with people (makes it easier to surrender and feel and not feel so stupid).

Anyone have anything to add?

Looking to share some space this summer? I just graduated from a College of Design in Denver and will be looking for an internship/career start in the Bay Area for several weeks. Here’s a little bit about me:

I am 36 years old and prior to my recent degree in Industrial Design worked as a graphic designer and massage therapist around Arizona and Boulder/Denver, Colorado.

My passion is dance (Contact, Salsa/Tango), and I’ll be attending many of the wonderful dance opportunities the Bay Area has to offer this summer, including the West Coast Contact Festival, June 29-July 4th. I enjoy a balance of conversation and quiet time, with plenty of adventurous strolls around the city and its pockets of nature. (I’m a fanatic photographer, so you’ll get plenty of photos as souvenirs of my stay, if you’d like.)

I’m looking for a friendly place that is not a party zone, preferably near the Bart and a safe, walkable pedestrian traffic area. I do need a safe place to park my car included in my stay. Since I am conducting a career/intern search on this trip, I will need to be able to patch into your Wifi with my laptop to write emails. Besides that, all I need is a place to rest my head and throw together some food.

I'm working on a new piece for July/August, called Proximity and am looking for performers.

The piece explores interconnection, isolation, behavioral rules, and physical honesty and mixes stage performance with audience interaction. The themes and methodology of the work emerge out of two of Frost’s previous works, Ashes (exploring the juxtoposition of release-based partnering with emotional explorations from Growtowski and somatic psychotherapeutic modalities) and Axolotl (a participatory performance in which the audience is blindfolded for 2 hours and invited to interact with each other and a group of actors and dancers exploring the slippery nature of meaningful experience).

Looking for performers with skills/experience in some combination of…
· contemporary dance/release technique
· physical acting
· the technical sides of contact improvisation
· somatic-psychotherapeutic modalities
· exploring personal interaction / good conversation
· butoh
· martial arts

The audition will be in the form of a 3 hour workshop, half of which will be a training in release-based contact improvisation and the other half working with explorations in interactive performance.

Looking both for Project Members and for “Extras”

Project Members will be helping develop the work and will be full members of the piece. There will be 10-12 of us in all … we are looking for one or two more project members.

Project Members must be available for the rehearsal period of June 25 – July 25 and for performances July 26- Aug 12 in San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Rehearsals will be in wilderness retreat out on the Yuba River.

Money to pay performers is out of ticket sales, so would likely be a token amount only. Food and transport is covered during the rehearsal month, however. Also, Project members can do Body Research trainings for free during the period of the project including
· Dancing Wilderness Project: July 13-16
· Contact workshop at Cabrillo College: July 29 – August 4
· Anatomy Lab: August 11-19

Extras will be incorporated into the transitional elements between proscenium and participatory sections of the work and during the interactive parts will be something like “Prepared Audience Members”. We are looking for about 6 Extras.

Extras must be available to come out for 3 - 5 days of rehearsal out on the Yuba River and be available in the period of July 26- August 12 for performances. The rehearsal period will be sometime in July, specific dates tba, depending on people’s schedules. Due to the nature of the work, there can be some flexibility, if you can’t make all the performing nights. This is unpaid, but some exchange for workshops is offered.

We will be departing from our usual Sunday Jam location (Studio 2844 - 2844 Dundas St. W, 3rd Floor - at Dundas St. W / Keele St.) to head to the beach by 1:30pm, or possibly earlier.
You are strongly encouraged to join us in the Sunday Jam (11am - 1:30pm) at the Studio ($5) prior to going to the Island, so that we don't lose track of anyone.

This years' improvisation retreat will bring teachers from SPAN, Spontaneous Performing Artists Network, a national group of improvising artists, together in a lab environment to explore improvisation and performance. At the end of the week, participants will perform with SPAN in Washington D.C.

General Information: Wild Meadows is surrounded by 200 acres of secluded mountains ranges, and fertile valleys near the Allegheny mountains, an ideal location for reflective thought and investigation into the Contact Improvisation practice and art form. Some previous experience is requested as this will result in the greatest exploration potential as an ensemble. Break periods will be scheduled to enable participants to take in the glorious natural surrounding of the farm and its cultural heritage. The area is home to Amish, Mennonites and Quakers. Also nearby are Architect, Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Waters built with a creek running under it.

FOOD: is included in the cost and will be communally prepared. Each participant will be requested to assist in the preparation of 2-3 lunch/dinner meals (with workstudy assistance) during the week-long retreat.

London contact dance community

Hi friends,

Just about 10 days ago i came back from India and in there i was staying in the community of Auroville this year for about 2 months only. While there i really learned to enjoy contact improvisation i never tried before and went 3 times a week because i just loved it. In the past i have tried different kinds of meditations from Vipassana to Osho but none of them is more fun and deep at the same time as contact dance.

When i came back to London i went to try the class and jam here. It was also nice but more technical than the one i got used to in India. Somebody there told me that in Europe contact improvisation is usually more focused on technique and less on emotional awareness and having fun which is a shame. In Auroville there was so much communal feeling and love in the class and i'm missing that kind of energy here.

So now i'm looking for some people who would be interested to start a kind of contact dance community in London we could go to a park once in a while to do a jam. Last Sunday i went to Greenwich park with a friend and we were playing on the grass it was great fun. Especially now in the summer it is so easy to go out to play like children.

Anyone else interested?

We are organizing a camp dedicated to Contact Improvisation at Playa Del Fuego, one of the East Coast Regional Burning Man Even ts that happens over Memorial Day Weekend. PDF Spring 2007 event will take place this May 24-28 from Thursday 5 pm through Monday noon. We are looking for 15-25 people with a variety of levels of experience with CI to camp, do contact, teach contact, as well as enjoy the rest of the Playa Del Fuego experience. If you've always wanted to go to Burning Man but haven't, this is a great opportunity to get a taste of life on the playa. This is also a great place to spread the word about CI to many people who would be interested in it but not otherwise know about it.

Cost: $35.00 + donation to cover camp expenses. Cost for getting into Playa Del Fuego is $35.00. Tickets typically
sell out within 5 minutes of becoming available, and the next and last ticket sale is this Saturday, April 21st at Noon, EST. ECITE 2007 dates and information

Dear friends!

We are proud to invite you to the annual Europe Contact Improvisation Conference (ECITE). This year 2007, for the first time in the 22-years history, ECITE is happening in Russia. The organizing team from Saint-Petersburg is honored to be your host from 19 to 26 July 2007.

Beginning:
For the last 9 years there was a tremendous growth in the number of people practicing contact in Russia. Contact is spreading all over the country and it is continuing to gain more and more popularity. There are many teachers in Russia who have been teaching for years and the number of new teachers is continuing to grow. Guest teachers
from all over the world also invited every year. And a lot of research and collaboration in contact happens inside Russian community. In the early 90-s there were only a few people interested in contact and in 1998 we began our exchange with the European contact community with our first ECITE in Potsdam, Germany. We where very
impressed with the efficiency and the positive atmosphere of the conference and we appreciated the clear and spacious structure. For this year we decided to keep `classic' structure of ECITE with teacher's exchange in the morning, study labs in the afternoon and jams and performances during the evening and night hours. We will
work 7 days, from Thursday to Saturday and from Monday to Thursday with one day off. We are working to prepare the ECITE for you and to make it inspiring, fruitful, comfortable and creative exchange. And we would
be happy to hear any questions, requests and feedback from you.

Following is the most important logistical information about ECITE 2007.

The place:

ECITE 2007 is going to take place in the part of Saint-Petersburg well-known for a large number of educational and scientific organizations. It is located in the North of the city and is approx. 30-45 min distance from the historical center of the city (on the metro or by car). All the classes and jams are going to happen in a
large Gym building that is surrounded by a park (Park Sosnovka) and a small lake (Olginsky lake). This lake and the corresponded beach is a popular place of recreation for the city dwellers and are taken care of on a regular bases (the sand and the water is clean and good for swimming). There is a playground on the beach and
the kid's laughter is a constant background there. Park Sosnovka also has a good maintenance and there are a lot of sport facilities.

Arrival and registration:

To register at the conference please visit our website: www.ecite.org. Please register earlier, so we would have a clear picture of who is arriving. When you arrive to the place there will be workexchange people waiting for you at the door. They will show you around. We are happy to organize a team of helpers who would meet you at the airport or at the train station. Please let us know ahead of time if you would like to be met. After the arrival at the ECITE all participants will receive plastic cards that will allow for access to all the conference facilities.

How to get there:

The easiest way to get to the place is by metro. The closest metro station is called "Politechnicheskaya" (Poli-techni-cheskaya). There are as well buses and mini-buses that would take you right to the doors of the conference.

Traveling to Russia:

>From Moscow: The easiest way to travel from Moscow to Saint Petersburg is by train. Check out the website:

The Moscow Contact Festival is also going to organize a group traveling on a train from Moscow to St-Petersburg and back to Moscow for easiest and safe transportation. Please inform them about your travel plans to be included in the group info@contactfestival.ru.

>From Europe: By plane or by train (there are trains from Germany, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland etc.). The prices are affordable. For example a train ticket Helsinki-Moscow coasts 50€ and the travel time is 6 hours.

A lot of airplane companies have cheep flights to Helsinki and Turku. Knowing that we recommend traveling through Finland. We are also going to organize a transfer from those cities to Saint-Petersburg. It will be a small bus with our own driver circulating Helsinki – Tampere - Saint Petersburg. Please let us know if you are
interested in that option. The coast of the transfer will be 20€.

Visa/Invitation:

For those who will participate in Moscow Contact Festival all the visa and invitation preparation can be made by the MCF organizers. They generously offered to take care of it. For those who will travel directly to Saint Petersburg those preparations will be done by the ECITE organizers. Please send us all the required information
as it explained on the registration page. The formal invitation letter will be send to you by email, fax and mail. Please have all the copies with you when you travel because often you will be asked for an original document on the border. We recommend you to register as soon as possible because it takes much longer time in Russia to
prepare any document. And we will be very sad if you won't be able to join us because of a silly paper work.

Facilities:

We will have an access to a total of 6 studios: (2x450 m² + 2x250 m² + a dojo studio with a soft floor). Plus another large room (400 m²) for sleeping and daytime rest. Every studio will have an access to changing rooms and restrooms including showers and sauna.

Accommodation:

You have several options:

a) A common sleeping room with enough places for all the participants (free). The sleeping room is a large and bright room about 400 m² with windows facing the non-sunny side of the building and is secure and comfortable. This room will have enough space for all the participants. Please bring your own sleeping bags, mats and
blankets if you need them.

b) For those who prefer a hotel room or an apartment (some people were interested in a cooperative sublet) we will prepare those opportunities for you for additional coast. Please let us know ahead of time.

c) Another option might be to stay with a participant from Saint-Petersburg. Some of the local participants might offer such opportunity if you contact them directly (please inform us about it ahead of time as well). The last option will most likely include daily public transportation experience.

For those who will choose a hotel we will book 2 and 3-bed rooms in a hotel 20-min walking distance from the conference. The price for a hotel room is 20€ a night. Also we are going to rent several apartments near the complex for those who prefer a private accommodation to a hotel. Please inform us soon about your choice.
The hotel and the apartment prices are not included in the coast of the conference.

Meal:

The participation fee includes food coast: 3 times a day meal plus snacks and tea for unexpected hunger attack.

There are 2 café's in the gym building. Both have a constant experience in serving tourists and conferences with international participants. They can cook vegetarian food and they are prepared to meet a diverse range of ECITE preferences. If you need a special diet, let us know ahead of time, so we would try to accommodate your
needs.

For breakfast and for an occasional emergency food meal we will have snacks, cereals and tea/coffee table/room in the building.

There will be drinking water delivered for the needs of the conference. The tap water in Saint Petersburg is not good for drinking.

Fee:

The price is 230 Euro, with the visa invitation – 250 Euro
Early registration (before 1st May) – 200 Euro, with the visa invitation – 220 Euro

Ray Chung is a performer, teacher, researcher, engineer, and artist who has worked with Contact Improvisation since 1979. He uses Contact Improvisation as part of his improvisational performance practice. He integrates other movement forms into his work, including martial arts, body work, and Authentic Movement. He has worked with various pioneers of Contact Improvisation, and regularly collaborates with dancers, musicians, and other artists.

ECITE 2007 info letter

Dear friends!
We are proud to invite you to the annual Europe Contact
Improvisation Conference (ECITE). This year 2007, for the first time
in the 22-years history, it is going to happen in Russia. The
organizing team from Saint-Petersburg is honored to be your host.

Beginning:
For the last 9 years there was a tremendous growth in the number of
people practicing contact in Russia. Contact is spreading all over
the country and it is continuing to gain more and more popularity.
There are many teachers in Russia who have been teaching for years
and the number of new teachers is continuing to grow. Guest teachers
from all over the world also invited every year. And a lot of
research and collaboration in contact happens inside Russian
community.
In the early 90-s there were only a few people interested in contact
and in 1998 we began our exchange with the European contact
community with our first ECITE in Potsdam, Germany. We where very
impressed with the efficiency and the positive atmosphere of the
conference and we
appreciated the clear and spacious structure.
For this year we decided to keep `classic' structure of ECITE with
teacher's exchange in the morning, study labs in the afternoon and
jams and performances during the evening and night hours. We will
work 7 days, from Thursday to Saturday and from Monday to Thursday
with one day off.
We are working to prepare the ECITE for you and to make it
inspiring, fruitful, comfortable and creative exchange. And we would
be happy to hear any questions, requests and feedback from you.

Following is the most important logistical information about ECITE
2007.

The place:

ECITE 2007 is going to take place in the part of Saint-Petersburg
well-known for a large number of educational and scientific
organizations. It is located in the North of the city and is approx.
30-45 min distance from the historical center of the city (on the
metro or by car). All the classes and jams are going to happen in a
large Gym building that is surrounded by a park (Park Sosnovka) and
a small lake (Olginsky lake). This lake and the corresponded
beach is a popular place of recreation for the city dwellers and
are taken care of on a regular bases (the sand and the water is
clean and good for swimming). There is a playground on the beach and
the kid's laughter is a constant background there. Park Sosnovka
also has a good maintenance and there are a lot of sport facilities.

Arrival and registration:

To register at the conference please visit our website:
www.ecite.org. Please register earlier, so we would have a clear
picture of who is arriving. When you arrive to the place there will
be workexchange people waiting for you at the door. They
will show you around. We are happy to organize a team of helpers
who would meet you at the airport or at the train station. Please
let us know ahead of time if you would like to be met. After the
arrival at the ECITE all participants will receive plastic cards
that will allow for access to all the conference facilities.

How to get there:

The easiest way to get to the place is by metro. The closest metro
station is called "Politechnicheskaya" (Poli-techni-cheskaya). There
are as well busses and mini-busses that would take you right to the
doors of the conference.

Traveling to Russia:

From Moscow: The easiest way to travel from Moscow to Saint
Petersburg is by train. Check out the website:

The Moscow Contact Festival is also going to organize a group
traveling on a train from Moscow to St-Petersburg and back to Moscow
for easiest and safe transportation. Please inform them about your
travel plans to be included in the group info@....

From Europe: By plane or by train (there are trains from Germany,
Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland etc.). The prices are affordable.
For example a train ticket Helsinki-Moscow coasts 50Ђ and the travel
time is 6 hours.

A lot of airplane companies have cheep flights to Helsinki and
Turku. Knowing that we recommend traveling through Finland. We are
also going to organize a transfer from those cities to Saint-
Petersburg. It will be a small bus with our own driver circulating
Helsinki – Tampere - Saint Petersburg. Please let us know if you are
interested in that option. The coast of the transfer will be 20Ђ.

Visa/Invitation:

For those who will participate in Moscow Contact Festival all the
visa and invitation preparation can be made by the MCF organizers.
They generously offered to take care of it. For those who will
travel directly to Saint Petersburg those preparations will be done
by the ECITE organizers. Please send us all the required information
as it explained on the registration page. The formal invitation
letter will be send to you by email, fax and mail. Please have all
the copies with you when you travel because often you will be asked
for an original document on the border. We recommend you to register
as soon as possible because it takes much longer time in Russia to
prepare any document. And we will be very
sad if you won't be able to join us because of a silly paper work.

Facilities:

We will have an access to a total of 6 studios: (2x450 mІ + 2x250 mІ
+ a dojo studio with a soft floor). Plus another large room (400 mІ)
for sleeping and daytime rest. Every studio will have an access to
changing rooms and restrooms including showers and sauna.

Accommodation:

You have several options:

a) A common sleeping room with enough places for all the
participants (free). The sleeping room is a large and bright room
about 400 mІ with windows facing the non-sunny side of the building
and is secure and comfortable. This room will have enough space for
all the participants. Please bring your own sleeping bags, mats and
blankets if you need them.

b) For those who prefer a hotel room or an apartment (some people
were interested in a cooperative sublet) we will prepare those
opportunities for you for additional coast. Please let us know ahead
of time.
c) Another option might be to stay with a participant from Saint-
Petersburg. Some of the local participants might offer such
opportunity if you contact them directly (please inform us about it
ahead of time as well). The last option will most likely include
daily public transportation experience.

For those who will choose a hotel we will book 2 and 3-bed rooms in
a hotel 20-min walking distance from the conference. The price for a
hotel room is 20Ђ a night. Also we are going to rent several
apartments near the complex for those who prefer a private
accommodation to a hotel. Please inform us soon about your choice.
The hotel and the apartment prices are not included in the coast of
the conference.

Meal:

The participation fee includes food coast: 3 times a day meal plus
snacks and tea for unexpected hunger attack.

There are 2 cafй's in the gym building. Both have a constant
experience in serving tourists and conferences with international
participants. They can cook vegetarian food and they are prepared to
meet a diverse range of ECITE preferences. If you need a special
diet, let us know ahead of time, so we would try to accommodate your
needs.

For breakfast and for an occasional emergency food meal we will have
snacks, cereals and tea/coffee table/room in the building.

There will be drinking water delivered for the needs of the
conference. The tap water in Saint Petersburg is not good for
drinking.
Fee:
The price is 230 Euro, with the visa invitation – 250 Euro
Early registration (before 1st May) – 200 Euro, with the visa
invitation – 220 Euro

got back from a really nice learning experience with ci last night and thought i'd share.
